Get Down on Saturday

Capo on III

You can also play without the capo and C chords, but to get the bluesy feeling, and to avoid the Bb chord, it's easier with A chords. Not too sure about the chords all the way through, especially the chorus. Try adding some 2nds, 6th and 7ths to get the bluesy feeling.

(A)

(A) Ran like hell but I missed my train
And I'm standin' here in the freezin' rain
Starin' at no ticket in
(E7) my hand

I'd (A) like some coffee but I spent my dime
I just had to call her one more time
Thought for sure this time she'd (E7) understand

Well the (D) man just said I could come inside
But my eyes are red from where I've cried
And at least outside my tears just look like (A) rain

     (G) Got down on (A) Saturday
But (G/b) I'll be up on (A/c#) Monday
(G/b) If I can just find (A) Sunday in this rain

I turned up my collar and I walked away
When I heard somebody say
Hey mister do you have the time

I wheeled around and there was no one
And I cried to myself what have you done
Was my own voice tore right through my mind

As the street shot by my feet I cried
Oh God I'm not complete there's somethin' else
Somewhere I've left behind

     Got down on Saturday
But I'll be up on Monday
If I can just find Sunday
     I got to find Sunday
     I got to find Sunday

Ahhh I got down on Saturday
But I'll be up on Monday
If I can just find Sunday
     I got to find Sunday
     Let me find Sunday

Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings

Capo on III

(G) (D/f#) (G7/f) (C) (G)

Last (G) night, (D/f#) quietly, she (G) walked through my (G7/f) mind
As (C) I lay searching for (G) sleep. (D)
Her (G) soft hand
(D/f#) reached out, she (G) whispered (G7/g) my name
As she (A7) brushed a tear from my (D) cheek.

And then those (G) funny (B7/f#) familiar (Em) forgotten (A7) feelings
Started (D) walking all over my (G) mind. (D)

It's sad, so sad to watch love go bad,
But a true love would not have gone wrong.
I'm just thankful for the good times we've had
For without them I could not go on,

With these funny, familiar, forgotten feelings
     Walking all over my mind.

          (D) I must go (C) on, be (G) strong,
          (A) Though a million teardrops may (D) fall.

Before these funny familiar forgotten feelings
Stop walking all over my mind

Before these funny familiar forgotten feelings
Stop walking all over my mind

(G) (D/f#) (G7/f) (C) (G)

Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)

There are several versions of this song. The one on Harlequin Melodies (1968) / Sings His Own (1972) is transcribed below. Scroll further down for the stunning acoustic version recorded in 1991 and available on Youtube

Capo on III

(G) (Em)

(Em) I woke up this morning
The (A) sundown was shining (Em) in
I found my broken mind
In a brown paper bag, but (B7) then
(Em) I tripped on a cloud,
I fell eight miles high.
(Am) Tore my mind on a (Adim) jagged sky.
I (Em) just dropped in to (B7) see
What condition my (Em) condition was in.

I (Em) pushed my soul in a
(A) Deep dark hole and I (Em) followed it in.
I met myself crawling after
As I was (B7) crawling in
Then I woke (Em) up so tight I thought
I'd never unwind
I (Am) Saw too much man it (Adim) broke my mind.
I (Em) just dropped in to (B7) see what condition
My (Em) condition was in

(Em) (A) (Em) (A) (G)

Oh Mary had a little lamb
She had a (A) little lamb
She had a (Em) little lamb

(Em) (A) (Em)

(Em) Somebody painted 'April Fool'
In big black (A) letters on a dead-end (Em) sign.
I had my foot in the gas
When I left the road and blew out my (B7) mind
(Em) I'm eight miles outta Memphis
And I got no spare
(Am) Eight miles straight up (Adim) downtown somewhere
I (Em) just dropped in to (B7) see what condition
My (Em) condition was in

I just dropped in to (B7) see
what condition my (Em) condition was in

Yes I just dropped (A) in to (Em) see
what condition my condition was in

I just dropped (A) in to see
what condition my condition was in

Acoustic 1991 version

I've transcribed the A chord as an A5 because I'm pretty sure you don't hear the upper strings, but it's probably an Am.

(Em) (Csus2) (D7) (Em)

(Em) I woke up this morning
The (A5) sundown was shining (Em) in
I found my broken mind
In a brown paper bag, but (B7) then
(Em) I tripped on a cloud,
I fell (G) eight miles high.
(A5) Tore my mind on a (C) jagged sky.
I (Em) just dropped in to (B7) see
What condition my (Em) condition was in.

I (Em) pushed my soul in a
(A5) Deep dark hole and I (Em) followed it in.
I met myself crawling after
As I was (B7) crawling in
Then I woke (Em) up so tight I thought
I'd (G) never unwind
I (A5) Saw too much man it (C) broke my mind.
I (Em) just dropped in to (B7) see what condition
My (Em) condition was in

(Em) Somebody painted 'April Fool'
In big black (A5) letters on a dead-end (Em) sign.
I had my foot in the gas
When I left the road and blew out my (B7) mind
(Em) I'm eight miles outta Memphis
And I got (G) no spare
(A5) Eight miles straight up (C) downtown somewhere
I (Em) just dropped in to (B7) see what condition
My (Em) condition was in

The Queen

Capo on I

Another interesting modulation in the outro - see chords below.

(G) (Em) (G) (Em)

(G) Far beyond the edge of (Em) evening
There's a (C) land between the moon and the (G) sun
(C) Where the blessed Queen of (G) Emptiness
Her singing has (D) begun

(G) To soothe the savage (Em) warriors
Who (C) feel themsleves (G) betrayed
By the (C) caravan of circus (G) clowns
(D) That joined the (G) parade

(G) Her melody falls (Em) gently
(C) To where I stand (G) below
(C) God I listen so (G) intently
(A7) I want so much to (D7) know

(G) The Queen's soft velvet (Em) laughter
Trips (C) lightly through my (G) mind
(C) Singing once their words had (G) meaning
(A7) But now they barely (D7) rhyme

(G) So desperately I (Em) follow
(C) As she leads me up a (G) hill
(C) Sharply tempting (G) roses
(A7) And poisoned (D7) daffodils

(G) Where a thousand velvet (Em) voices
(C) Fill the morning (G) air
(C) Where we ran through the (G) meadow
(A7) Flowers in her (D7) hair

(G) Beyond the edge of (Em) evening
In a (C) land between the moon and the (G) sun
(C) The blessed Queen of (G) Emptiness
Her (D) singing has (Em) begun (C) (Am) (F) (Dm) (Bb)

Sweet Memories

Capo on IV

The rhythm guitar plays a G/d as the root chord (the bass plays the low g).

The sus chords added at the end indicate the violin melody.
And the mysterious shift to Eb at the end is a stroke of genius.

(G) My world is like a (G7) river
(C) As dark as it is dee
(D) Night after night the past slips in
And gathers all (G) my sleep

(G) My days are just an (G7) endless stream
Of (C) emptiness to me
Filled (C/b) only (C/a) by the (G) fleeting
Moments (D) of her (G) memory

      (D) Sweet (G) memories
      (B7) Sweet (Em) memories (A) (G) (D) (Gsus4) (G) (Gsus2) (G)

She slipped into the silence
Of my dreams last night
Wandering from room to room
She's turning on each light

Her laughter spills like water
From the river to the sea
I'm wept away from sadness
Clinging to her memory

     Sweet memories

Good Morning Dear

Theyve done something rather special with the choir on this one: it first sings two separate lines from Wrote You A Song/Angeline, which are then developed into the full verses sung at the end.

(G) Yesterday's newspaper forecast
No rain for (Am) today (D7) (G) (G/f#) (G/e) (G/d)
(G) Winter's in labour, it will soon
Give birth to the (Am) spring (D7) (G) (G/f#) (G/e) (G/d)

(G) Were the nights any sweeter?
The morning's any cooler (Am) when she was here
Was her (D7) mind grown accustomed
To hearin', 'Good (G) morning, dear' (G/f#) (G/e) (G/d)

(G) Should I still feel the sunshine
Remembering brings to mind (Am) in my thoughts of her
When (D7) Lord, we both know things
Could never (G) be the way they were (G/f#) (G/e) (G/d)

(G) Her little girl confusion built the walls of illusion
Between (Am) right and wrong
That (D7) stand there between her and a dream
(G) That I cherished too long (G/f#) (G/e) (G/d)

(G) All faded and tattered
Once all that mattered when (Am) she was here
And this (D7) mind had grown accustomed
To hearing, (G) 'Good mornin', dear' (G/f#) (G/e) (G/d)

(G) Were the night's any sweeter
The morning's any cooler (Am) when she was here
(D7) Or was her mind grown accustomed
To hearing, 'Good (G) morning, dear' (Am)

(G) Should I still feel the (Em) sunshine
Yesterdays newspaper forecast
Remembering brings to (Am) mind in my thoughts of her
No rain for today
(D7) Lord, we both know things
Yesterday's news is old news
Could never be the (G) way they were
The skies are all grey

(G) Were the nights any sweeter?
Winter's in labour it soon
The morning's any cooler (Am) when she was here
Will give give birth to the spring
Was her (D7) mind grown accustomed
And sprinkle the meadows with flowers
(To hearin', 'Good (G) morning, dear'
For sweet Angeline)

Sunshine

Some of 'bass' melody transcribed below is actually played by the strings and/or slide. On a single guitar, you could leave it out of course.

(G) (G/f#) (G/e) G/d)

(G) Sunshine, you may find my (G7) window but you won't find (C) me (Em/b) (Am)
(D) Sunshine, I've got my friend the darkness here at night to (G) hide me
(G) Sunshine as far as I'm concerned I'm where (G7) I want (C) to be (Em/b) (Am) (Am/g)
(D/f#) Sunshine as far as you're concerned don't be concerned for (G) me

(G) She doesn't (G7) want me (C) anymore (Em/b) (Am) (Am/g)
(D/f#) She doesn't need me (G) anymore (G/f#) (G/e) G/d)

(G) She's grown tired of chasing (G/b) rainbows (G/a)
Oh, (G)I loved her so, (G/f) God you know I (C/e) tried (C/d) (Am/c)
(D) But I guess (D/c) she was right 'cause (D/b) at the end,
I've found (D/a) a pot but there's no (G) gold inside

(G) So sunshine can't you (G7) see I'm not alone don't bother (C) me (Em/b) (Am)
(D) Sunshine pack up your dawn and move on down the (G) street (G/f#) (G/e) G/d)
(G) Sunshine as (G/f#) far as I'm (G/f) concerned Lord where I (C) gotta be (Em/b) (Am) (Am/g)
(D/f#) Sunshine as far as you're concerned, don't be concerned for (G) me (G/f#) (G/e) G/d)

Are My Thoughts with You?

This one is in Bb, so capo on 3. The descending bass runs through most of the song. And note again the modulation at the end.

I'm gonna plant me some (G) seeds (G/f#) (G/e) (G/d)
I'm gonna grow me an (C) ocean (C/b) (Am) (Am/g)
Cut down some (D/f#) trees (D/e) (D) (D/c)
And build me an (G) island

I'm gonna stand on the (G) corner (G/f#) (G/e) (G/d)
I'm gonna flag down a (C) streetcar (C/b) (Am) (Am/g)
Go somewhere and (D/f#) phone her (D/e) (D) (D/c)
And ask her where my (G) thoughts are

I'm gonna say to her:

Are my thoughts with (G) you (G/f#) babe (G/e) (G/d)
How twisted (C) they are, babe (C/b) (Am) (Am/g)
Since you went  (D/f#) away, (D/e) babe (D) (D/c)
I ain't been thinking too (G) straight

If that don't get (G) through (G/f#) (G/e) (G/d)
I'm gonna build me a (C) flower (C/b) (Am) (Am/g)
And sit down in the morning (D/f#) dew (D/e) (D) (D/c)
And kiss it every (G) hour

Yes I'm gonna:

(G) Turn out the lights, (G/f#) turn on the night
(G/e) Give up the fight, (G/d) catch me a kite
(C) Go for a flight, (C/b) who cares what's right or (Am) wrong (Am/g)
When I (D/f#) get to the moon, (D/e) rent me a room
(D) Sit in the gloom by the telephone (D/c)

I'm gonna cry to her:

Are my thoughts with (G) you (G/f#) (G/e) (G/d)
How twisted, babe, (C)  are they (C/b) (Am) (Am/g)
Since you left me this (D/f#) way, babe (D/e) (D) (D/c)
I just ain't thinking too (Em) straight (Em/d) (C) (A)

Time Is a Thief

This one follows a standard country ballad progression - with a fitting majestic vocal by Newbury.

(G) (D6/f#)

(G) I woke up this (G7) morning
(C) And looked at (G) my life
Filled with so much (Em) sorrow and (Am) grief (D)
(G) And my (G7) troubled mind
(C) Could see through (G) the  strife
That (D/f#) time is only a (G) thief

(G) Yes time was a thief (G7)
(C) That stole my (G) tomorrows
Left me with (Em) only (Am) yesterday (D)
(G) Time has (G7) robbed me
(C) Of my precious (G) years
My youth (D/f#) the only ransom I could (G) pay

You got to (C) treasure each little (G) moment
You can't (C) let a single (Bm) minute slip (Am) away (D)

(G) Time (G7) is a thief
(C) That robs you of (G) the years
But never (D/f#) returns one (Em) yesterday (Em/d) (C)
(G) Oh no, no (D) one (G) yesterday

Weeping Annaleah

On guitar, this one is perhaps easier to play in C (capo on V) or D (capo on III). Great progression though.

(F) (Cm)

(F) Yesterday the sun was shining
But you're finding
The sun don't shine (Em) all the time
(Dm) A winter day (Dm+) suddenly
(Dm6) Came your way (Dm+) suddenly
(A7) And you ran (Dm/a) into (A7) your mind

     (Bb) Sleeping (F) Analeah
     (Bb) Weeping (F) Analeah
(Bb) Do you think (Am) you're ready for (Ab) me?

(C7)

Well yesterday is gone forever
And ever and never
To be again
Baby I look for the sunshine,
It brought warmth to my mind
But find only rain

     Sleeping Analeah
     Weeping Analeah
No, you're not ready for me

When yesterday becomes a memory
A memory that we
Uncover in time
If you can remember
A cold December
I rained in your mind

     Sleeping Analeah
     Weeping Analeah
Well then you'll be ready for me
